Habitats, Havens and Homes in Victoria's Watery World
Many marine creatures show a preference for a particular habitat, where
they establish their home or territory and where they eat, breed, and
grow - and hide from predators and rough seas. The following are just
some of the marine habitats found off south eastern Australia that support
unique assemblages of animals and plants - special communities that
are found nowhere else in the world. There are many groups of animals
and plants in the cool waters off southern Australia that have restricted
or localised distributions. For example, 85 per cent of the 600 or so
fish species are unique to this region with only 11 per cent shared
with New Zealand.
